The Nurture of Jupiter c.1540-1600
Oil on canvas | 148.8 x 115.0 cm (support, canvas/panel/stretcher external) | RCIN 402777
-
This is one of two replicas (RCIN 402658 & 402777), both probably by English artists, of a painting by Giulio Romano in the Royal Collection (RCIN 402781). Both replicas take liberties with the format of the original, in this case greatly extended the composition above.
Provenance
All three versions of this composition are listed in Queen Anne's inventory of 1710: the original (402781) is in the Queen's Gallery at Kensington Palace (no 83); two versions (presumably 402658 and 402777) described as 'doorpieces' (that is overdoors) and 'after Giulio Romano' are listed at Windsor Castle, one in the Little Bedchamber (no 17) and one in the Prince's Eating Room (no 219). These copies are probably also those listed in 1688, one in the same room at Windsor (no 755) and one in the Queen's Little Bedchamber at St James's Palace (no 1223)
