This painting shows the Judgement of Paris, one of the events that precipitated the Trojan war and an extremely popular subject in painting. In the upper left the shepherd-prince Paris sits in the act of judging which of the three goddesses is the most beautiful. At the extreme left and right, Juno and Minerva undress, while in the centre, Mercury unveils Venus, who will eventually triumph.
The painting's extremely darkened state is such that it is not possible to be certain if it is an original by Ludovico.Provenance
Recorded in the 2nd Privy Lodging Room at Whitehall in 1666 (no 186)
