Ecce Homo c.1550-60
Oil on canvas | 115.3 x 159.0 cm (support, canvas/panel/stretcher external) | RCIN 402676
-
A large number of figures in groups in a town-square; Christ and Pilate can be seen in the group at a balustrade, right of the centre, with a group below gesticulating. The background is of towers and temples. Coarsely painted, this is a simplified rendering, slightly reduced on all sides, of a print by Lucas van Leyden of 1510.
Thought to have been painted in Venice in the middle of the sixteenth century, the painting resembles works by Battista Angelo del Moro such as The Commissioning of the Fleet (1570-2, Accadmeia, Venice).Provenance
First recorded in Queen Caroline's Dressing Room at Kensington Palace in 1818 (no 487) as Tintoretto
