Venus and Cupid
Oil on canvas | 101.5 x 90.0 cm (support, canvas/panel/stretcher external) | RCIN 402659
-
Venus, seated, three-quarter-length, frontal, turns to look over her shoulder to Cupid, who places his hand on her shoulder. He stands on his quiver, which is placed on a table or parapet; there is a curtain behind them to the right.
This painting has long been described as a copy after Titian, but there is no evidence that he ever painted such a picture. In a general way the types and their attributes are imitated from his, but this is a feeble picture and does not seem to be by an artist trained in his workshop.Provenance
Bears the red wax seal of the Capel family; one of a group of paintings acquired in 1731 with the lease of Kew House from Lady Elizabeth Capel by Frederick, Prince of Wales; recorded in the Dressing Closet at Kensington Palace in 1818 as Titian (no 587)
