This is a copy after a painting by Adriaen van de Velde in Dresden (inv no 1659), which is signed and dated 1669. It was acquired as one of three copies after famous Dutch masters (Adriaen van de Velde and Wouwerman). A winter scene with figures on the ice, one attaching his skates; figures standing on the left; on the right is a cliff face with a castle perched on the snow-covered edge.
Provenance
One of a group of three paintings (CW 258-60, 402473, 402511 and 402507) acquired by Queen Victoria in 1839; recorded in Room no 125 at Windsor Castle in 1879
