Head and shoulders of Prince Albert Victor of Wales, facing very slightly to the right, wearing a black Highland jacket, white shirt and black bowtie. Red drapery background. A preparatory study for the larger family portrait made for Queen Victoria in 1876 (RCIN 402328). The Queen's Journal and the Prince of Wales's Engagement Book record that Von Angeli visited Buckingham Palace in April, June and July 1875 in connection with the commission. These studies were painted for the Prince and Princess of Wales and were in the Saloon at Marlborough House.
