This is a copy, probably dating from the 18th century, of Claude's Port Scene of c. 1633 (Museo de Arte de Ponce, The Luis A. Ferre Foundation). A harbour scene with various sailing vessels around a central lighthouse and surrounding shore; in the foreground men relaxing and drinking; on the left a classical temple and two large trees; a fortified town on a hilltop in the distance.
Provenance
Acquired by George III or inherited from his father, Frederick, Prince of Prince; probably one of the ‘two little Clauds, damaged’ seen at Kew by Horace Walpole in September 1761; recorded in 1805 in the Queen’s Work Room, Kew (no 16), described as ‘Claude, A Landscape, canvas 2ft 4in x 3ft 1in (71 x 94cm).
