This painting shows a rare view of a fruit garden. The ‘Steward’s Plot’ was cultivated below the northern slopes of Windsor Castle for the benefit of the Dean and Clergy of St George’s Chapel and their families. Fruit and vegetable gardens were separated until about 1710; here raspberries, currant bushes and gooseberry standards (the smaller spherical plants) are planted in neat lines. On the right, a gardener tends to a plant protected by a glass cloche, possibly a melon.
