This view forms one of a set of 10 copies after Canaletto acquired by George IV.
The painting is a copy after Canaletto’s view of the Grand Canal: The Rialto Bridge from the North (Private Collection, England) and takes a similar view to RCIN 400668 from the Grand Canal series, commissioned by Joseph Smith. Buildings visible in the painting include the corner of the Palazzo Civran on the far-left, the Rialto bridge, the Palazzo dei Camerlenghi, the Naranzeria and the Fabbriche Vecchie di Rialto
An engraving after the original was published by Boitard in 1736.

One of a set of ten copies acquired by George IV; all ten recorded in Store at Carlton House in 1819 (no 261) as 'after Canaletto'
