A view from the bare rocky shore down Loch Fyne from Pennymore, near Furnace on the western side of the Loch, looking across to Strathlachlan. The far shore is bordered by mountains; a grey cloud, the edges lit by the sun from behind, is at the centre of the pale sky. . Presented by the artist to Queen Victoria at the Diamond Jubilee of 1897; and stated to have been based on a view sketched by the Queen on 25 September 1875, when she had driven down to the shore of the Loch with the Duke and ‘Tried to sketch the view’. The Queen’s sketch, a less elaborate work, is in the Royal Library (K.43 / 12a verso).
