Landscape with Cattle Crossing a Stream 1644-5
Oil on canvas | 75.8 x 98.9 cm (support, canvas/panel/stretcher external) | RCIN 400546
-
In Claude's own list of works, his Liber Veritatis, this is number 83; its position in the sequence means that it must be dated to 1644-5. It was painted for Gabriele Rienzi, a Flemish stone-cutter working in Rome. Despite is poor condition, it would appear to be a fine example of Claude's early maturity, which may be compared with Landscape with the Ponte Molle of 1645 (Birmingham City Museum and Art Gallery).
Provenance
Acquired by George III or inherited from his father, Frederick, Prince of Wales; probably one of the 'two little Clauds, damaged' seen at Kew Palace in September 1761 by Horace Walpole; recorded in 1805 the Queen's Work Room, Kew.
