H Baumgartner (active c. 1850) was known for his Alpine views. Several of his works have been sold at recent auctions, including Travelers at Rest in an Alpine Landscape, which is compositionally similar to this work.
Alpine landscape with figures, cattle and horses in the foreground, and a man with a scythe leading a young child on the right; several trees in the middle distance on the rocky bank of the lake, ringed beyond with tall snow-capped mountains. Lake Brienz, just north of the Alps, is in the Canton of Berne in Switzerland.
