An informal photograph of Queen Alexandra (1844-1925) when Princess of Wales, carrying her daughter Princess Louise (1867-1931) on her back.
Before Princess Louise's birth on 20 February 1867, Alexandra, Princess of Wales was extremely ill with rheumatic fever. Her illness had serious long-term effects. Her right knee was permanently damaged and her inherited deafness, whilst initially slight, began to worsen. This photograph was taken in September 1868 to show the public that the Princess had recovered from her illness. The photograph was very popular when it became available for sale to the public. -
