This was the men’s first experience of dry land in nearly 500 days, after an exhausting six-day boat journey. Shackleton recorded the near-hysterical reactions of the men: 'They were laughing uproariously, picking up stones and letting handfuls of pebbles trickle through their fingers like misers gloating over hoarded gold'.
