The Exhausted party on the beach at Cape Valentine, Elephant Island. [Photographs of scenes and incidents in connection with the happenings to the Weddell Sea Party, 1914, 1915, 1916] 15 August 1916
This was the men’s first experience of dry land in nearly 500 days, after an exhausting six-day boat journey. Shackleton recorded the near-hysterical reactions of the men: 'They were laughing uproariously, picking up stones and letting handfuls of pebbles trickle through their fingers like misers gloating over hoarded gold'.
