Gilt wood, silk damask | 83.0 x 46.5 x 55.0 cm (whole object) | RCIN 236
-
A set of eighty-eight giltwood dining-chairs, with a gently curved top rail decorated with stylised husks, uprights with gentle scroll top and upper twists and a double bar splat joined by two rosettes; standing on square in section sabre legs. Square seat upholstered in a number of silk damasks including red, green or blue and gold foliate silk damask.
Provenance
Fifty-four chairs of the set supplied to George IV for the Gothic Dining Room at Carlton House. These were later delivered to Morel and Seddon for refurbishing, 21 November 1828, and were subsequently used in the Large Dining Room (now the State Dining Room) at Windsor Castle, the Library (now the Green Drawing Room), His Majesty's Writing Room and the Large Drawing Room (now the Crimson Drawing Room).
Some of the chairs were also sent to Brighton and appear in Nash's drawings c.1824 of the Yellow Drawing Room/Music Room Gallery. In 1838 they were repaired, re-gilt and the silk taken off and dyed.
Messrs Tatham & Bailey were responsible for supplying furniture to the Royal Pavilion and the Prince Regent's household generally. Founded in the 1780s, they had premises at 14 Mount Street in Mayfair. The partnership was originally between George Elward and William Marsh, with Edward Bailey joining the firm in 1793 and Thomas Tatham (brother of the designer C.H. Tatham) in 1798. From 1803 to 1811 the firm styled itself 'Marsh and Tatham' or 'Tatham and Bailey'. They were joined by Richard Saunders in 1811, and thereafter were generally known as 'Tatham, Bailey and Saunders'. -
