Photograph of the starboard side of the Magga Dan exloration ship as used during the Trans-Antarctic expedition. In 1958, the Commonwealth Trans-Antarctic Expedition headed by Dr Vivian Fuchs and Edmund Hillary, made history by making the first overland crossing of Antarctica. This was an acheivement that Shackleton had attempted but failed to achieve during the Imperial Transantarctic Expedition of 1914-17.
