Carved giltwood rocking cradle lined with buttoned red silk edged with fringing; carved with scrolling strapwork, putto masks, coats of arms at the ends and foliage, with a background of ochre paint; caryatid-type figures above the scrolling rockers.
Provenance
This cradle was acquired by Queen Victoria in 1843 for Princess Alice. Lady Lyttelton wrote on 24 May 1843 (Queen Victoria's birthday), 'The chief present is a beautiful sketch by Landseer of the Princess Tiny [Alice], in a cradle lately given, which belonged to the old Saxon house.' (Correspondence of Sarah Spencer, Lady Lyttelton, 1787-1870, ed. Hon Mrs Hugh Wyndham, London 1912).
