Pepys served under James, Duke of York, as a senior naval administrator. When James was sent abroad in 1679 to calm the political waves after the Popish Plot, Pepys was briefly imprisoned in the Tower of London over false accusations over Papism. He was reinstated in 1684. These Memoires are a critique of the work of the commission and a defence of Pepys’s own achievements in naval affairs.
The frontispiece shows a portrait of Pepys, by R. White after G. Kneller. This same portrait was used by Pepys as a bookplate in his copy of Sir Winston Churchill's Divi Britannici.Provenance
Probably acquired by William IV, 1830-37
