Don the Merino ram was a gift from George III to Arthur Young, farmer and editor of the Annals of Agriculture. He had been imported from Estremadura, Spain, in 1790. Number 3 in the list of rams in the Royal Flock, he was graded ‘B’ for wool and ‘C’ for carcase. This engraving was made in 1791, when Don was four years old. George III gave 259 sheep from his Spanish flock to 43 different recipients between 1788 and 1811. Young described his gift from the King as meriting the attention of mankind. The engraving is reproduced in HB Carter’s limited-edition work on George III’s Merino sheep.
