Capricci of ruins

The subjects of these drawings are probably entirely imaginary, showing the overgrown ruins of a church and a rustic cottage. Canaletto included a ladder leaning against a wall and a woman collecting water. Capricci were often admired for showing the ruins of the glorious past as an unremarked backdrop to mundane life, imbuing the works with subtle messages about earthly transience.
