An album of paintings and calligraphy

The lacquer covers of this album are painted with a landscape scene incorporating figures from popular literature. The first opening shows the woman holding a gun is the fabled warrior queen Chand Bibi. On the second are the characters of a well-known love story, Baz Bahadur and Rani Rupmati, hunting on horseback.

Many of the openings in this album show a seventeenth-century painting on one side and an eighteenth- century ‘response’ on the facing page. Both of these paintings depict the women as figures of beauty and desire. They represent the ideal feminine characteristic of nazakat (delicacy of demeanour).
