Her Majesty The Queen acquires study for Annigoni portrait

The Queen has acquired a finished study by Pietro Annigoni (1910-1988) for the artist’s 1969 portrait of Her Majesty in the National Portrait Gallery.  The head-and-shoulders work in oil distemper and pastel (60 cm x 40 cm) was produced in the course of a number of sittings at Buckingham Palace. Annigoni took the study to his studio in Florence  and  used it as a model when working on the full-length portrait,  in which Her Majesty wears the robes and insignia of the Order of the British Empire. ... The Queen’s Gallery, Buckingham Palace Unfolding Pictures: Fans in the Royal Collection The Queen’s Gallery, Buckingham Palace Until 11 February 2007 The first exhibition of fans from the Royal Collection brings together over 80 examples, ranging in date from the early 17th century to the 1930s. Queen Charlotte, Queen Victoria, Queen Alexandra and – in particular – Queen Mary, all owned significant groups of fans.

Mary, Queen of Scots’ portrait and private prayer niche unveiled, as the historic apartments re-open to the public

Mary, Queen of Scots’ Chambers and the ‘Darnley Rooms’, the historic heart of the Palace of Holyroodhouse, will reopen to the public in time for the Christmas holidays. The Palace was home to Mary following her return from France in 1561 and was the setting for many dramatic episodes in her short and turbulent reign (1542-67). She married Henry Stuart, Lord Darnley, at Holyrood in 1565 and the following year witnessed the brutal murder of her Italian secretary, David Rizzio, by her husband.

Christmas at Windsor Castle

The Queen’s Gallery, Palace of Holyroodhouse 16 June 2006 – 7 January 2007 Our image of Venice has been shaped to a remarkable degree by the work of Giovanni Antonio Canal, known as Canaletto (1697-1768). His dazzling paintings and lively drawings have fixed the 18th-century city of canals, palaces, churches and squares in the popular imagination. Canaletto’s greatest patron was his friend and agent Joseph Smith, the British Consul in Venice.

Publication of 'A Birthday Souvenir Album' to celebrate The Queen’s 80th Birthday

Published by Royal Collection Publications on 6 June, Queen Elizabeth II: A Birthday Souvenir Album charts The Queen's formal and family life over eight decades, presenting a portrait of Her Majesty as daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother and Head of State.

The Queen's dolls go on display

Dolls given to Her Majesty The Queen throughout her life will be shown at Frogmore House near Windsor Castle from 16 May.  The centrepiece of the display is a charming doll presented in 1930 and played with by Princess Elizabeth when she was very young.
