On Saturday, 2 September, Windsor Castle's biggest ever Family Festival will give young visitors all the skills they need to become a medieval knight for the day. For the first time, the Festival will be held in the Castle's famous Quadrangle, giving visitors special access to the vast space in which Edward III staged magnificent jousting tournaments more than 650 years ago.

Throughout the day, a huge range of drop-in activities will guide children through the training required to become a knight. Once they have gathered enough stamps on their 'Passport to Knighthood', fully trained young knights will be eligible to take part in a knighting ceremony in St George's Chapel and be presented with a special Windsor Castle medal.

In the Quadrangle, children can learn to joust on hobby horses, practise their sword skills and find out just how heavy a knight's armour really was. Historic falconry demonstrations will include exciting flying displays and an opportunity to get up close to these amazing birds of prey, while demonstrations of medieval crafts such as embroidery, pottery and pewter casting will inspire children to create their own heraldic coat of arms in arts and crafts workshops.

As they explore the Castle grounds, families will be transported back in time through wandering and staged performances by period-music players, acro-jugglers and a court jester. After marvelling at the sight of two medieval knights processing on horseback, children will have the chance to meet modern-day soldiers from the Household Cavalry, who will be accompanied by a real tank. A serving Military Knight of Windsor will be on hand in St George's Chapel to describe what it is like to live and perform ceremonial duties at the Castle today, as part of a chivalric institution that dates back to 1348.

For younger children, interactive storytelling sessions will bring to life tales of courage and chivalry by knights and princesses. The ever-popular Bach to Baby concerts for under-fives will give little knights the chance to dance, roam about and enjoy live period music in the Castle's beautiful Moat Garden, where families are welcome to picnic throughout the day.

The Windsor Castle Family Festival: Knights in Training Day is at Windsor Castle on Saturday, 2 September, 10:00 – 16:00. All activities are included in the price of admission to Windsor Castle.
