On Saturday, 6 August, families visiting Buckingham Palace can take part in a host of fun activities to celebrate Her Majesty The Queen's 90th birthday year. The Family Festival will take place in the Family Pavilion on the West Terrace at Buckingham Palace, at the Royal Mews and The Queen's Gallery.

Visitors to the Family Pavilion, situated on the Palace’s West Terrace and overlooking the magnificent 39-acre Garden will be welcomed by the sight of a 24ft giant from Roald Dahls' much-loved children's book The BFG.  The illustration, which was commissioned specially for Buckingham Palace from renowned illustrator Sir Quentin Blake, is the first-ever life-sized drawing of the Big Friendly Giant.

Sir Quentin Blake said, 'It was very exciting to be invited to do a drawing especially for Buckingham Palace.    Since I first illustrated Roald Dahl’s classic book in 1982, I have seen the BFG in various shapes and sizes, however, this is the very first time I have actually seen him life size.  I hope there will be many visitors who will enjoy having their photograph taken with him.'

Inside the Family Pavilion families can enjoy storytelling sessions throughout the day, take part in arts and crafts activities to make hats inspired by The Queen's outfits, or even design their own BFG 'dream jar'.  Under-fives are invited to play in the toy kitchen to decorate a birthday cake or play in the soft-matted area.

Families visiting the Royal Mews at Buckingham Palace can take part in object-handling sessions, arts and crafts activities or have fun dressing-up in costumes.  At The Queen's Gallery, visitors with children can join a special family tour of the current exhibitions Scottish Artists 1750 – 1900: From Caledonia to the Continent and Maria Merian's Butterflies and participate in arts and crafts sessions between 11:00 and 15:00.

All activities are included in the price of admission to the State Rooms at Buckingham Palace, the Royal Mews and The Queen's Gallery.
