Audio tours will be available for the first time this summer at Buckingham Palace and the Palace of Holyroodhouse in Edinburgh. The commentaries provide a lively guide to centuries of royal history, the treasures of the Royal Collection and the role of the Palaces today as official residences of The Queen. Each tour is introduced by His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales, Chairman of the Royal Collection Trust, and includes interviews with Royal Household staff about the working Palace and the magnificent works of art on display. Both adult and family tours have been created for each site, and children can explore the Palaces with an accompanying activity trail.
Developed with Antenna Audio, the tours run on the award-winning X-Plorer™ machine, which hangs around the neck and can be used with or without headphones. The commentaries allow visitors to enjoy the Palaces at their own pace, with the option of hearing more detailed information about a particular aspect of a room or work of art, for example, by choosing additional 'layers'.
Mike Stevens, Managing Director of Royal Collection Enterprises, said, 'We hope the audio tours will provide an enhanced experience for our visitors and will give a fascinating insight into the history of these world-famous buildings and how the Palaces are used today.'
The tours, which are included in the admission price, will be available at the Palace of Holyroodhouse from 9 July and at the Summer Opening of Buckingham Palace from 1 August to 28 September.
