If you are searching for the perfect ingredient for a Diamond Jubilee tea party, this may be exactly what you require. To mark Her Majesty The Queen’s 60 years on the throne, the Royal Collection has commissioned a fruitcake from Fiona Cairns, the cake designer who made the wedding cake for The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.
The Diamond Jubilee cake (£14.95), which is handmade to a traditional recipe, can be served alongside the Royal Collection’s Diamond Jubilee tea (£8.95), specially blended for 2012. The tea caddy in which the blend is presented is designed to accompany the official range of Diamond Jubilee china, made exclusively for the Royal Collection. The range includes a tea cup and saucer (£49), side plate (£35), a limited-edition cake stand (£395) and limited-edition teapot (£250).
Fiona Cairns is renowned for her fruitcake and produced an eight-tiered, handmade cake decorated with sugar flowers for The Duke and Duchess’s wedding on 29 April 2011. Her recipe for the Royal Collection is based on a traditional dark fruitcake, made with Lexia raisins, Vostizza currants, whole nuts and Napoleon brandy. The mixture is matured for three months before it is ready. Decorated with a red Buckingham Palace ribbon, the cake is topped with an iced crown created for the Royal Collection from a vintage army button.
Fiona Cairns said, ‘At our bakery we are delighted to be making a cake exclusively for the Royal Collection. We believe that cakes should look fantastic and taste delicious, and we never settle for second best when selecting ingredients for our products.’
Nuala McGourty, Retail Director at the Royal Collection, said, ‘This beautiful cake complements our Diamond Jubilee china range perfectly and is a fitting addition to a celebratory tea marking this momentous occasion.’
The official Diamond Jubilee range consists of fine bone china (from £25), textiles (from £8.95) and a commemorative tin range (from £5.95). It can be purchased online at www.royalcollection.org.uk/shop. (Please note that the cake is not available online.) The range is also available from the Royal Collection shops in London at The Queen’s Gallery, Buckingham Palace and on Buckingham Palace Road, and in Edinburgh, at the Palace of Holyroodhouse, telephone 0845 330 2898.
All profits from the sale of the Diamond Jubilee china range are dedicated to the Royal Collection Trust, a registered charity. The aims of the Trust are the care and conservation of the Royal Collection and the promotion of public access and enjoyment through exhibitions, publications, loans and educational activities.
