CANALETTO (VENICE 1697-VENICE 1768)

Venice: The Piazza, looking west

c.1723-4

RCIN 907434

To the left, the Procuratie Nuove run around the south-west corner of the Piazza to reach the church of San Geminiano. The whole of the west range of the Piazza, facing us in this view, was demolished in 1807-10 to make way for the Ala Napoleonica, intended as a palace for Napoleon. The belltower of San Moisè projects over the roofline of the Procuratie Nuove, and a temporary stage stands to the right.
