1982

R. Jack Saemala

Magnify image

This dala was presented to The Queen during her visit to the Solomon Islands in October 1982.

A dala is worn by a chief at feasts and gatherings. It is made of two layers of material; one side made from a segment of a turtle shell carved into a filigree overlay, the reverse made of clam shell. The necklace is made of old shell money called 'kasa'. It was made by R. Jack Saemala of Langalanga Lagoon.
