Fred Williams (1927-82)
In 1973 The Queen visited Australia to open the Sydney Opera House, which had been designed by the Danish architect Jørn Utzon. This painting was presented to Her Majesty by Sir Robert Askin, then Prime Minister of New South Wales, at the opening on 20 October 1973.
Fred Williams was a distinguished Australian artist and printmaker. He trained at the National Gallery School in Melbourne and Chelsea School of Art in London. He returned to Melbourne in 1957 and, after mainly working with figures in early paintings and etchings, he began painting landscapes which remained the major theme of his art.
