Model of the Toran Gate

Magnify image

This delicate wood carving is a replica of a gate known as Toran or temple arch (Kirti Stambha) in Vadnagar, formerly the capital of ancient Gujarat. Around the gate are reproductons of rural life - mango trees, a farmer with an ox and plough, a group of folk dancers, a pigeon loft and a hay stack.

It was presented to The Queen on her visit to Ahmedabad in January 1961.
