After a period spent in the Navy, acted as an ambassador for Henry. During the wars against France of the 1520s, led numerous successful raids from Calais. Undertook diplomatic visits to Eastern Europe and was the first English ambassador to Poland. Lieutenant of Calais from 1530. Appointed Captain of Guīnes in 1540. Ambassador to France 1540-41. Nominated to the Order of the Garter in 1543 and installed in 1544.
