Fluent in French and Italian, probably won a place at court through his skill in languages. Mainly served Henry VIII abroad, both as a diplomat and soldier, and lost his right eye at the siege of Morlaix in 1522. Appointed Comptroller of the Royal Household in 1536, Lord High Admiral in 1540 and Lord Privy Seal in 1542.
