Appointed Vice-Admiral in 1537. Created Viscount Lisle after the death of his step-father, Arthur Plantagenet. In 1542 was made Warden-General of the Scottish marches. In January 1543 was appointed Lord High Admiral, and was made a Knight of the Garter a few months later. An ambassador to France in the wake of Henry's military victories of 1544 and 1545. Elevated to the earldom of Warwick on Edward VI's accession and, in 1549, wrested control of the government from Edward Seymour. In 1550, he became Lord President of the Council, which ruled in the King's name. Supported Lady Jane Grey's claim to the throne on Edward's death and executed by Mary in 1553.
