Trained as a lawyer, Lovell allied himself to Henry VII, and was appointed Speaker of the House of Commons in the first parliament of the Tudor period. Appointed Chancellor of the Exchequer in 1485 and Treasurer of the Royal Household in 1503. Fought for Henry VII at the Battles of Stoke and Blackheath, and appointed Knight of the Garter in 1500.
