Sir Charles Somerset, Lord Herbert of Raglan and first Earl of Worcester

A cousin of Henry VII. He was made Knight of the Garter in 1496 and created Baron Herbert in 1504. His power increased under Henry VIII, who gave him positions of great influence in Wales. Made Earl of Worcester in 1514. Conducted negotiations with Francis I, leading to the meeting of the French monarch with Henry VIII at the Field of the Cloth of Gold. Buried in St George's Chapel, Windsor, where his marble effigy survives in the Beaufort Chapel.
