Fought in France in the early part of Henry VIII's reign and knighted by 1525. Vice-Chamberlain of the household from 1526. In 1534 it was reported that he had been unable to reconcile himself with the King's religious policies and was determined to become a Carthusian. Returned to court in 1536. In 1540 became a member of the Privy Council, Constable of the Tower and Comptroller of the Royal Household. Present at the siege of Boulogne. Edged out of government under Edward VI, but restored to office under Mary I.
