Presented to Queen Victoria

This photograph was taken during the British Arctic Expedition, under the command of Captain George Nares, in 1875-6. The expedition set out to reach the North Pole; although unsuccessful, it did reach a Furthest North of 83° 20' 26'' N, which was not to be surpassed for another 20 years. Queen Victoria was presented with a set of photographs from the expedition, taken by Thomas Mitchell, the paymaster on HMS Discovery and George White, assistant engineer on HMS Alert.
