Gentoo penguins, Elephant Island

Frank Hurley

Presented to King George V, 1917

Penguins were an essential part of the Elephant Island cuisine, providing the crucial fresh meat that kept hunger and scurvy at bay. This colony of Gentoos would quickly have been destined for the larder.
