Preparing the boat for the relief voyage to South Georgia

Frank Hurley

Presented to King George V

For Shackleton’s relief voyage to South Georgia the carpenter McNish went to work on the James Caird, the largest and most seaworthy of the three boats. He raised her sides and covered her over with a roof made from tent fabric to provide some shelter for the men crossing the southern ocean.
