Frank Hurley and Leonard Hussey on night watch

Midwinter 1915

Frank Hurley

Presented to King George V, 1917

In this peaceful domestic scene, Hurley (1890-1962) the photographer (left) and Hussey the meteorologist (1891-1964), play a quiet game of chess while on watch. Beside them lie the remains of a supper of tea, bread and sardines. Leonard Hussey later practised as a doctor, until his retirement in 1957.
