The Heart of the Great Alone: Scott, Shackleton and Antarctic Photography

Huge blocks weighing upwards of 50 tons were thrown about in indescribable confusion

September-October 1915

Frank Hurley

Presented to King George V

As his title indicates, Hurley continued to be fascinated by the weird and wonderful shapes thrown up by the shifting ice floes, as well as the sight of the vulnerable ship dwarfed by huge grotesquely formed blocks of ice. The sharp edges and eroded shapes of the ice appear to have been softened in this image by a recent fall of snow.
