Endurance in the pack ice at the end of winter

Frank Hurley

Presented to King George V, 1917

Endurance is marooned in a sea of ice with no way forward, no way back, at the mercy of the wind and currents. The vastness of the ice-field is reinforced by the relative flatness of its surface and the almost unbroken horizon.
