The Queen in Tuvalu

26 October 1982

John Shelley

Donated by Rex Features

In October 1982 The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh visited Tuvalu and the Solomon Islands as part of their tour of Australia and the Pacific Islands. Tuvalu, formerly known as the Ellice Islands, achieved independence in 1978, but retains The Queen as Head of State. In this photograph The Queen is seen being carried aloft in a dug-out canoe festooned with garlands and flowers. The Duke of Edinburgh follows in a similarly adorned canoe.
