  • James Moore and his partner John Gumley were cabinet-makers to George I
  • They specialised in richly carved pieces of furniture, particularly mirror frames and tables
  • Moore was a highly skilled worker in gesso, the mixture of chalk and size that was built up in layers on a wooden ground, carved in low relief and gilded
  • Moore was unusual in signing several of his pieces of furniture, including two tables in the Royal Collection
  • There are five tables and two pairs of torchères by Moore in the Royal Collection
