Schools: The Royal Mews
|
The Royal Mews is open from 20 March 2010. School groups take part in booked Education sessions on Tuesdays and Thursdays during term time. The maximum group size is 35. Sessions last around 1 hour 15 minutes and a lunchroom is available.
One of the finest working stables in existence, the Royal Mews provides a unique opportunity to learn about the horses and carriages that play an important part in The Queen’s official and ceremonial duties. |

Exploring the Royal Mews KS1 and KS2
How does the coachman climb up to drive the carriages? What do carriage horses learn in the riding school? Who rides in the Gold State Coach?
This session encourages children to ask questions about the special environment of the Royal Mews: your class takes part in an interactive tour, looking for clues including royal symbols and investigating the daily work and training that take place here.
In the Education Room, pupils explore handling objects and garments worn for state occasions to think about the colours and tradition of royal events. |

Queen Victoria and the Royal Mews KS2
This discussion and discovery session introduces pupils to the Royal Mews and looks for evidence of Queen Victoria’s reign. Look out for Queen Victoria’s cipher and the miniature carriages designed for her children.
Following a tour of the carriages and stables, pupils may make a drawing of a Victorian horse-drawn carriage or use the self-guided activity sheet (details below). All materials are provided.
