  • Born in Corfu, the son of Prince Andrew of Greece and Princess Alice of Battenberg, and a great-great-grandson of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert
  • After school (chiefly in the UK), trained in the Royal Navy, rising to the rank of Commander; his active naval career ended on the accession of The Queen in 1952
  • Became a naturalised British subject in 1947, as Lieutenant Philip Mountbatten
  • Created Duke of Edinburgh 1947, shortly before his marriage to Princess Elizabeth (HM The Queen)
  • In 1956 launched The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme, to encourage the personal development of young people
  • Has formed an important collection of contemporary art, notably by British and Commonwealth artists
  • A keen amateur artist, in oils, particularly of landscapes seen on his worldwide travels; also a keen photographer
  • Was the initiator of the original Queen’s Gallery at Buckingham Palace, opened in 1962
  • Chaired the Restoration Committee for the restoration of Windsor Castle after the 1992 fire
