The Heart of the Great Alone

The departing sun
1915RCIN 2580069
Photograph of the "Endurance" in the right of the background in silhouette against the sky. Ice floes dominate the foreground.
An example of Hurley’s fascination with the texture of the ice hummocks, their contours softened by windblown snow and the dying sunlight sparkling on the surface. From late March the sun gradually began to disappear, at the start of the Antarctic winter.
