HMS Endurance laying to awaiting the opening up of the pack

Photograph of Endurance trapped in the ice, a large plume of ice stands to the right of the middle ground.
Shackleton recorded that during the evening of 1 January ’we forged ahead rapidly through brittle young ice, easily broken by the ship’. Hurley had clearly been scouting for striking photographs earlier in the day, as this grotesquely shaped hummock attests, a finger of ice pointing at the ship.
