Photograph of Victoria, the Princess Royal, later Empress of Germany (1840-1901), and Princess Alice, later Grand Duchess of Hesse and by Rhine (1843-78) who sit together on a bench outside. The Princess Royal holds a walking stick in her right hand and places her left hand on her sister's shoulder. Both sisters wear dresses, jackets and hats. The photograph was probably taken in front of the gardener’s cottage on the Balmoral estate. The artist Edwin Landseer stayed here in 1850 and it may have been where Fenton himself stayed.
These portraits taken at Balmoral were part of the last commission Fenton received from the Queen Victoria.
