The Queen sits for Lucian Freud

2001

RCIN 2584774

David Dawson, painter and photographer, became an assistant to one of Britain’s most distinguished artists, the late Lucian Freud, in 1991. Among Dawson’s best- known photographs is a series begun in 2000 of Freud at work, which includes this image of The Queen sitting for Freud in the picture conservation studio at St James’s Palace. The painting, which provoked mixed reactions, was presented by the artist to The Queen in 2002.
